Kaban+ Vintage Upcycled UPDATED
Local designer and friend of Oceanparkstudio Yoshimi Radstrom expresses her wholly original aesthetic in the clothes of Kaban+, a fashion collection that re-imagines, reconstructs, and up-cycles vintage and found clothing.
Yoshimi’s work explores the aesthetic possibilities of refashioning discarded materials to create something wholly new and even more intriguing than the original. There is a cleverness to the recombinations, both in terms of the visual and linguistic puns that emerge and in the quality of craftsmanship itself. To witness this level of tailoring detail applied to such humble materials is part of the charm and appeal of her work.
Handmade from found and vintage materials, the clothing of Kaban+ reflects a burgeoning interest in “sustainable” fashion, in re-using materials and reimagining their purpose. Yoshimi peruses Los Angeles area flea markets and second-hand shops for vintage t-shirts and linens, blue jeans and scraps of silks. She then deconstructs and reconstructs the finds, maintaining the integrity of the original material while adding hand-stitched, sashiko-inspired tailoring that reveals her deep background in garment production techniques. The resulting pieces have an appealing throwback quality while simultaneously showcasing a quiet sense of humor and a regard for traditional forms of making.
Kaban+ featured in WWD!! Kaban+ was the only denim collection highlighted by WWD in their Spring market roundup. Using vintage Levi's, Yoshimi adds a distinctive, Southern-California-easy-Japanese-traditional flair all her own. See more of the collection here. (photos on location by Daria Kobayashi Ritch)
