Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of visiting a working cattle ranch in San Miguel, CA. For those of you more familiar with wineries, that’s near Paso Robles in the Central Coast. Many of you know of my appreciation for all things bovine (and ovine, and llama-ine). The visit was an inspiring reminder of how varied in geography, lifestyle, and habits our state is.

And then there were the cows. Here’s a curious piece of trivia: according to Wikipedia, “some consider cattle the oldest form of wealth, and cattle raiding consequently one of the earliest forms of theft.”

Aforementioned cattle ranch operates under the tenets of thoughtful animal husbandry: they treat the cattle, and the land, with an eye to ethical behavior and conservation. The cattle are grass fed, grain finished, and “free range.” Oceanparkstudio has been engaged to launch online sales of frozen beef  target date of first shipments late September! The proliferation of online food sales — the frozen variety, as well as individual meals — speaks to a number of trending habits: the time-saving benefits of “auto-pilot” ease of delivery and repetition, mingled with a growing interest in purchasing food stuffs from smaller, local producers — people traditionally more likely to take care of the land, the animals, and the employees. The rise of farm to table, farmer’s markets, CTA boxes, specialty markets and “provisioners” all speak to this desire to return to the small, the known.
